ou should read the gooks written by famous actors, producers, and directors. Reading the short bio about an author can help you know how their ideas have facilitated film, theatre or acting in the current world. You can approach instructors in your locality or request your favourite actors to suggest a few good reads.
2. Read monologues and plays
To practise acting skills, reading scripts is essential. It can help you comprehend characters and practise acting at home. More reading scripts will help you have more ability for the analysis of the material. After reading scripts, you can ask questions on a character’s life and answer those questions. Reading monologues or scripts also helps you perform the character’s role with different feelings and intentions.
3. Watch plays, movies, or television programmes
You should watch more movies and plays. First, you should focus on watching movies or plays of a particular genre. After having an idea about a specific genre, you can watch movies or plays of other genres. Watch your favourite movies or plays closely and pay attention to the acting of an actor.
4. Practise acting and cold reading
After having an idea about the industry, movies, and acting, you should start practising what you have learnt. You should closely watch a scene and acting of an actor before you practise. If you are practising alone, place a big mirror in the room to look at your acting yourself. You can ask someone in your family to cooperate with you in your acting practice.
An actor has to speak while acting. So, you need to practise speaking dialogues or scripts. For cold readings, you can take familiar lines of a monologue or script and read it well. You can get audio monologues from your local market. Listen to the audio of a monologue to practise.
5. Record yourself
Whether you practise cold reading or acting, you should record it. Doing this is essential when you are practising alone at your home. After recording your acting or reading, you can match your performance with the original one to know where you need to improve yourself.
Video and audio recordings will help you analyse your acting, voice, body movement, diction, and facial expression. Recording your performance and matching with the original one more than once will help you enhance your skills. Gradually, you will do better in cold reading and acting.
6. Use your imagination
Familiarising yourself with several different scenarios is good for at home acting practise. You should use your imagination to visualise the setting of a scene. And you should map out the visualised scene setting for a stage or the space you are in. And in your practice, you should move and act within the space or space setting. It will help you learn how you should act in that space.
